Patonga outrigger regatta attracts 13 clubs

The Central Coast Outrigger Canoe Club held its regatta at Patonga on Saturday, February 17.

Clubs came from as far south as Jervis Bay and as far north as Port Macquarie, with a total of 13 clubs attending.

"Patonga Beach offered our visitors perfect conditions in a scenic location with the majestic Lion Island as part of the course," said club secretary Kerry Forrester.

The long course single canoe (OC1) men's race over a distance of 16km saw a difference of only seven seconds from first to last over the finish line. Mitchell Nasser from Five Islands was the winner with a time of 1:14:43.

Paddler Sandy Hauraki, who competed in the OC1 short course, said: "The swell around the Lion offered some good runners to catch."

Club president Catherine Day said: "It was an inclusive regatta which provided opportunities for all levels of paddlers including junior and novice division races.

"Competitors appreciated the beautiful waterways of Broken Bay and Patonga."
