Rugby win to Gosford
Woy Woy was defeated by an unbeaten Gosford in a tight and entertaining game of rugby at Gosford Showground on May 22, according to Central Coast Rugby Union president Mr Larry Thomson.
The final score saw Gosford win 19 points to 12 in a "free flowing match" where both teams spread the ball and put on some great tries.
"Gosford dominated the first half territorially but were unable to get the points that this territory advantage gave them," Mr Thomson said.
"Woy Woy defended wonderfully and kept putting Gosford on the back foot with their very committed defence.
"Gosford opened the scoring in the early stages of the game when winger Adam Clift completed a fine run to score out wide.
"The try made the score five points to nil.
"Gosford were to score again quite soon after and when this try by captain Andrew Moseley was converted Gosford had jumped to a 12 points to nil lead.
"The remaining 20 minutes of the first half were scoreless.
"Both teams attacked and made good breaks but there was to be no result on the scoreboard.
"Best for Gosford in this period was prop Brad Porter who made some great tackles and was strong in the set pieces.
"He was well supported by Andrew Moseley and half back Damien Montgomery. "Montgomery continued his good recent form and made several inroads form the base of the set pieces during the game.
"Woy Woy were still in the game at the half time break and several changes at this break certainly put Woy Woy on the go forward.
"Lock Luke Serevi in particular was strong.
"He was dominant in both attack and defence, and was rewarded with two great tries in the second half and both were between the posts.
"This certainly put Woy Woy right back in the match.
"However Gosford were able to just keep in front for the second half.
"Woy Woy scored the first try in the second half to make the score 12 points to seven, but Gosford scored soon after to increase their lead to 19 points to seven.
"However Woy Woy were not to be denied.
"Serevi scored his second try after a strong run but the conversion was missed from in front of the posts.
"Gosford led by 19 points to 12 and this remained the score until the end of the match.
"Both teams had further chances to score in the final minutes but it was not to happen.
"Gosford remain undefeated and proved they are a most competent side.
"Woy Woy showed they are a real threat this year and are an excellent chance of a semi-final spot in 2010.
"They will get better and better when they get their combinations right."
Meanwhile the May 29 game between Woy Woy and Ourimbah was postponed due to wet weather and will be played over the long weekend on June 12.
