Seniors' centre on the lookout for skilled individuals
Ettalong's senior citizens' centre is "on the lookout" for motivated, skilled individuals with spare hours each week to fill a range of roles.
"We are always on the hunt for volunteers," said centre president Mr John Gibbins.
He said volunteers were wanted "to conduct an event, help with catering, design flyers to help promote the centre, or even look after our Facebook".
"We're a not-for-profit that will broaden friendships and open peoples' eyes to activities they may not have tried," he said.
"If you're wanting to learn a new skill, or simply polish up and old one, Ettalong 50 Plus will roll out the welcome mat for anyone aged 50-plus."
He said the Ettalong 50 Plus centre, at the corner of Broken Bay Rd and Karingi St, had a number of comfortable, practical spaces including a calm library space, a computer room, indoor bowling area, large dining room with a commercial-grade kitchen and a dance hall.
It had a broad and diverse range of activities including bootscooting, bridge, yoga, tai chi, table tennis, crafts, a choir and computer skills.
The community choir meets on a Friday at 12:30pm.
The Women's Shed art and craft group meets on Thursday mornings.
Leatherwork is held on Wednesdays from 9am to midday.
Members can make wallets, belts, key chains or perhaps something decorative.
Another class is Tech Savvy Seniors, a NSW Government initiative in partnership with Telstra that provides hands-on help with technology skills.
Ms Nicki O'Connor has been a convenor of a raft of club activities including playing cards, quilting and patchwork.
"I love teaching painting, card making, origami, simple jewellery, like bracelets and earrings.
"We do a lot of charity work too, making blankets for WeCare Connect.
"We upcycle Christmas cards too. We produced 368 for nursing homes last Christmas."
Memberships to Ettalong 50 Plus is $15 a year, with selected activities costing $3 each.
Member for Gosford Ms Liesl Tesch said: "I actively encourage locals looking for connection, opportunities to learn something new to step inside and see what's within the walls of the Ettalong 50 Plus Centre.
"Community clubs like Ettalong 50 Plus are safe, welcoming destinations run by older members of the community, for the benefit of older members of the community."
