Club suffers suspected data breach
Ettalong Diggers is one of a number of registered clubs subject to an alleged data breach where "some personal information of members and visitors may have been compromised".
A man has been charged with blackmail by Cybercrime Squad detectives investigating the alleged data breach for threatening to share the personal details of over one million people.
The squad was alerted on May 1 to a website which had published the personal information of patrons who signed-in using their drivers' licences at specific premises across NSW.
Detectives worked closely with Federal and State agencies to contain the breach.
They executed a search warrant in Fairfield West where they arrested a 46-year-old man on May 2.
The man was taken to Fairfield Police Station and charged with demanding with menaces, intending obtain gain or cause loss.
He was granted conditional bail to appear at Fairfield Local Court on Friday, June 12.
Ettalong Diggers' chief executive Mr Col Murphy said: "Ettalong Diggers was informed that one of our external service providers suffered a cyber security incident.
"Our internal IT systems have not been impacted and access has been blocked.
"The impacted provider supplied technology and services to assist us with our member sign-in and other promotional processes.
"While limited information is currently known, we understand that some personal information of members and visitors of clubs may have been compromised.
"We are working with the provider to identify the extent to which any data relating to Ettalong Diggers may be involved.
"We understand that the provider has notified the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, and engaged with the Office of National Cyber Security, NSW Police and the Australian Federal Police of the incident.
"Liquor and Gaming NSW has also been advised by ClubsNSW."
Mr Murphy said: "Please take extra caution when reviewing emails or texts and to avoid clicking on any suspicious or unfamiliar links."
