Brigade asks people to consider donating to flood relief
The Pearl Beach Rural Fire Service Brigade is asking people consider donating to relief efforts after the extensive flooding in Brazil.
Devastating floods are currently affecting the hometown of one of its members who came to Australia from Brazil 15 years ago.
"At the moment almost 400 towns are flooded," said brigade captain Mr Lindsay Boyd.
"Approximately 100 people have been killed by these floods, 130 are still missing and nearly 200,000 people have lost their homes or are unable to safely return until the flood recede.
"Many people will have lost everything, having escaped with only what they could quickly collect and carry through rising floodwaters.
"Many don't have basic necessities - fresh water, food, clothing or shelter.
"There are a number of organisations providing assistance to these victims who could benefit from donations, but it doesn't appear organisations like The Red Cross are currently involved.
"We recognise that many people are managing their own challenges due to the cost of living, but if anyone is in a position to help these organisations, all of us would appreciate it.
"The Pearl Beach Brigade encourages everyone to research any organisation or charity before sending any financial contributions."
