Water police lead outrigger rescue

Broken Bay Water Police headed a multi-agency operation to rescue six people who entered the water after their outrigger canoe capsized in the large and powerful swell east of box head.

It is understood the experienced crew was having its usual Saturday morning training session, when a "freak wave" on an otherwise calm day hit causing the canoe to overturn,

The paddlers boarded a Marine Rescue boat and the canoe was towed back to shore.

No-one was injured.

Water police reminded all boaters to be cautious.

"Although the winds are light, large and powerful waves are still present."
