Community groups join to oppose bushland rezoning
An alliance of 17 community groups, including three from the Peninsula, has written to Planning Minister Mr Paul Scully, calling on him to reject a rezoning proposal which could see 1200 dwellings built on conservation land across the region.
"We will not, ever, accept the destruction of our green ridgelines which are the visual landscape that gives the Central Coast its unique character," said Community Environment Network chair Mr Gary Chestnut on behalf of the alliance.
He said the rezoning would "devastate the future of the region's unique, irreplaceable and beautiful Coastal Open Space System - a system of scenic bushland reserves owned and managed by the local council since the 1970s which is a one of a kind and found nowhere else in NSW".It would "eliminate extensive areas of threatened species habitat", "wreck wildlife corridors between National Parks, State Forests and reserves", and "destroy the unique visual landscape, character and lifestyle of the Central Coast".
Areas around the Peninsula include Bulls Hill quarry, Phegans Bay bushland, and bushland at the bottom of Bulls Hill, near the tip in Nagari Rd and at Mt Ettalong.
Local groups which are part of the alliance include the Peninsula Residents Association; Grow Urban Shade Trees and The Bays Community Association.
